Milan is increasingly a “smart city“. From this morning, citizens and tourists will have various points in the city at their disposal to access maps, connect to the internet, recharge their mobile phones and use a new car sharing service for electric cars. The points have been called digital islands, of which fifteen are already active, and another twelve will be added by February. Nine of the already active areas make hostesses available until October 29 for a free car driving demonstration: Five days, Porta Venezia, Hoepli, Cusani, Pagano, Cadorna, April 25, Centrale Fs and Loreto Argentina.
The digital islands look like a picnic setting, “wired” to support the wireless internet service, wi-fi. On the wooden benches are installed “slippers”: a series of power sockets that allow you to recharge your smartphone or any other device, even an electric shaver, so to speak, outdoors. Instead of trees, each island has a touchscreen monitor that responds to the touch of your fingers.
From the screen you can consult the maps of the city and get information on places to visit, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues, but also on scheduled artistic events. For now they only have two languages, Italian and English, but by Expo 2015 they will speak all the languages of the world. The operating system mounted by the monitors is Windows 8, and will also use version 8.1, which Microsoft, one of the main sponsors of the project, will launch next Friday around the world.

Like a fence in picnic parks, the columns outside the islands have about twenty places to accommodate electric quadricycles for the car sharing service, an advanced form of time rental that also saves greenhouse gas emissions. The small cars have a range of one hundred kilometers, at a speed of thirty-five kilometers per hour, and can carry a maximum of two people. The means currently available are sixty, but they will become ninety in mid-November and one hundred and twenty in February. You can use them by activating a card lasting one year, and load them with a weekly subscription of ten euros or a monthly one of thirty. For tourists there are also hourly rates from around six euros, and special prices are provided for employees of companies who want to stipulate agreements. Quadricycles will also implement some applications, for example those that will allow you to know if there are cars available in the immediate vicinity, or even book your own parking space. To complete the installations there will be a state-of-the-art video surveillance system and intelligent lighting street lamps, which light up according to the number of people present. These measures make the system usable throughout the day, even at night. The project cost three million euros, and benefited from a regional tender to access European funding for technological innovation of 960,000 euros. The rest comes from private sponsors, who in this case are transformed into investors: A2A, Nhp, Linear, Telecom, Ducati Energia and Microsoft.
